Mandala Drawings created by 1st graders. For this project students began by learning about a variety of religious & artist mandalas. We watched a video of Buddhist monks creating a sand mandala, we looked at rose windows in churches, and last we looked at examples of artist mandalas. After analyzing what makes a mandala a mandala, students began creating their own.
We worked on black paper with construction paper crayons (These are different than regular crayons. They worked particularly well on colored paper.) Students first drew a target to create the different rings of the mandala. Then they began created patterns within each ring. Last, students cut out their completed mandalas.
Kindergarteners just finished up these great mixed media pieces. We read the story “If the Dinosaurs Came Back” by Bernard Most then created drawings of cities using geometric shapes. Afterward students cut out shapes from pre-drawn templates. Then we collaged them together and added a pattern to the body and face and added them to our cities.
