Are you a self-publishing author looking to hire an illustrator? Please read below before reaching out.
Here are some helpful resources to help you understand the process of working with an illustrator.
I do not work on spec or for exposure. I do occasionally donate my illustration skills for a good cause.
Hiring an illustrator is a financial investment toward your project. Expect to pay fair living wages.
Expect to sign a contract before any work begins.
Expect to pay a deposit, progress payment, and final payment.
You are paying for the work to be created and for rights granted, not for ownership of the artwork (in most cases). Please do your research and know what types of rights you need for your project.
Once a contract is signed the work takes months, typically between 4-6 months depending on the project and my current workload.
Stages of the illustration process are usually:
Pagination of the text
Thumbnail sketches of each double-page spread
Character design and development
Full sketches for each spread or illustration
Color studies
Final sketches/drawings
Final artwork
Ready to reach out? Please include the following information when you email:
Description of the project. Do you need illustrations for a picture book, a book cover, chapter illustrations?
Description of the story and cast of characters OR the manuscript (if you are comfortable with that).
Time frame for the project if you have one. I typically need 4-6 months to complete the work depending on the size of the project.
What rights do you need for your project?
Are you planning to sell the book? If so, do you have a marketing plan?
